Before applying for a payday loan, consumers should research payday loan laws to be familiar with payday lending laws in their state, so that the lenders do not charge extra fee form them.
The following states DO NOT allow payday loan or in other words payday loan in the following states is illegal.
Arizona – Till June 30, 2010 lenders were allowed to charge more than 36% on cash loans. The law expired that day and from July 1st, 2010 a law came into effect that forbids any loan given over 36% APR. Since payday loan business cannot survive at such a low rate, payday lenders abandoned Arizona form July of 2010.
Arkansas – In November 2008, the Supreme Court of Arkansas struck down the state’s Check-Cashers Act. This act authorized and regulated payday lending in the state. Arkansas state constitution prohibits any loan with an interest rate above 17%. Check-Cashers Act allowed rates between 168% and 559%, which the Court held to be illegal in violation of the state constitution.
Colorado – In August 2010 a law went into effect that capped payday loan rates to 45% APR and the term of the loan extended to 6 months. This term cannot be reduced. But lenders can charge an origination fee of $75, and monthly fees of $7.50 up to $30 per $100 borrowed.
Connecticut – Payday loans are prohibited here. There is an interest rate cap of 30.03% APR or $17 per $100-$600. To file a complaint you can report to Regulator – Connecticut Department of Banking.
Georgia – In 2004 Georgia state laws banned payday loans. For small loans there is a 16% per year cap. Maine – Payday loan prohibited.
