CAHABA HEIGHTS, Alabama -- Sure, there’s lots that’s familiar in the diner’s traditional, Southern, down-home dishes. There are dozens of fresh vegetables available each day (including fresh beans and fresh greens). They make their own pies, cakes and cobblers. But the meatloaf here is wrapped in bacon. The pork loin has a rosemary-scented cream sauce. The squash and onions are grilled, not simply sauteed, and you’ll taste the difference. If there’s a steam table at Suburban Grill, it must be in the kitchen because there’s a nice, small, unobtrusive bar in the part of the dining room where the table normally might be found.
These are big differences, and they certainly do set this new restaurant in Cahaba Heights apart from its competition. In fact, with the sophisticated, minimalist decor; attractive lighting; attentive wait staff; and impressive beer selection (draft, craft and HG); it’s easy to forget that Suburban Grill is, after all, a simpler operation than a full-service restaurant.
We walked in on a recent Monday night, asked for a table for four and quickly discovered that we had to order first. Once you place your order at the register near the door and pay, you can find a seat anywhere. Servers will bring your food to you.
Suburban Grill, open since early October, is the partnership of two Birmingham restaurant veterans. Owner Dusty Leeming (who has worked at Bonefish Grill and P.F. Chang’s) has teamed up with chef Travis Wolfe (who worked with Leeming at Bonefish).
