Two Leonardtown men charged with stealing car

Pair charged with stealing car

Two Leonardtown men were arrested Saturday on charging papers alleging they stole a car reported missing earlier this month from a park-and-ride lot in Charlotte Hall, and that the registration tags on the vehicle also had been solen there.

Devin W. Herrod, 19, was released from custody on $10,000 bond, and a judge ordered Monday that James Daniel Seifert, also 19, be held in lieu of 10 percent of $3,500 bond.

St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies filed charging papers stating the Honda Civic bearing the stolen tags was spotted traveling on Great Mills Road shortly after midnight Saturday morning, and they stopped the car and found Herrod in the driver’s seat, with Seifert riding as a passenger. The tags on the vehicle had been reported stolen Sept. 17 by John Beck of Mechanicsville, court papers state, and the car owned by John Jones of Mechanicsville was reported stolen on Oct. 3.

Herrod told police that he did not know the car was stolen and that Seifert had possessed it for about a month, court papers state, and Seifert told the law officers he bought the car from someone earlier this month and did not know it was stolen.

Two glass smoking devices with suspected marijuana residue were found in the car, according to a statement of probable cause filed from the investigation by sheriff’s deputies Cory Ellis, James Stone and Sgt. Robert Russell.

Herrod and Seifert were charged with theft offenses and the possession of marijuana.
